Antonio de la Esperanza
Junior Associate #3 - Raise the Bar
Welcome everyone!
Earlier this week I came across a great article by Mark Herrmann in "Above the Law" titled "A typical way associates screw up". If you haven't read it already, please stop now, click on the link, and do it.
Great, now that you are back here and informed, here is what I got from the article.
First of all, I think every lawyer needs to take a "partner" approach to work. Everything you need to review, everything you need to do, everything you need to "clear", you need to be able to stay behind it.
Responsibility is key to success.
Secondly, I think you need to really "read read" everything because of what you learn. The difference between any two lawyers comes to their differences on experience, so the more you read, the more you learn, the more you can differentiate yourself from others.
Additionally, as a Junior Lawyer, you are new to everything, so you shall be aware that whatever you don't "read read", you'll be ask about. Partners have this capability of finding important that line, that paragraph that you though it wasn't, so you will always want to be ready.
Raise your bar. Again and always.

I hope you liked the article and the post and let me know your comments!
